Some Recommended Study Resources

Obviously there are numerous resources that could be used to prepare for these exams. Your specific needs should be tailored to your experience and knowledge level. SME also offers several study guide packages at excellent discounts. Following is a list of a few key resources to aid you in your certification journey.

  1. Fundamentals of manufacturing. Rufe. 2nd edition (strongly recommended) This book is the official study guide for the CMFGT exam and also covers most of the CMFGE exam. It should be your key resource to guide you through your studies. Be careful not to order the 1st edition. It is less expensive, but not as comprehensive
  2. Machinery's Handbook (any edition will do) (strongly recommended) All good manufacturing engineers should already own a copy.
  3. Machinery's Handbook Pocket Guide
  4. TMEH Desk Edition (CDROM or hard copy)
  5. Manufacturing Processes & Materials. Schrader & Elshennawy. 4th edition.
  6. Fundamentals of Tool Design, 4th edition
  7. Manufacturing Engineering & Technology. Kalpakjian. 1995. This is a very popular manufacturing engineering text book and could be used as a substitute for the Manufacturing Processes & Materials book.
  8. CMfgE Self Assessment Program
  9. CMfgT Self Assessment Program
  10. CEI Self Assessment Program
